Short story :)

From his house, Jack could hear distant cries of a girl coming from north. Without a moment to spare, he abruptly jumped from his seat and headed towards the door, not forgetting to pick his ultimately furry jacket and a muffler before he exited his warm and comfortable house. Even though it was the middle of a winter blizzard, he knows his responsible well enough to act fast. The badge that says, "Town Chief" was securely tucked under all those fur attached to his jacket. That was his citizen calling, and she doesn't sound safe.

A few hours before, the blizzard went berserk. The snow became a harsh monster to anyone nearby. The trees were so easily toppled that everywhere you go, you can feel in your veins that nowhere was safe. Jack ordered a few men to help him save all the women and children that are still outside of their cottage. They agreed and one by one, kids are handed to their parents who were worried sick but didn't have the courage to step outside. In the end, Jack thought everyone was already safe. Well, he was wrong.

The blizzard became fiercer than ever. And there was one kid left to be rescued. She was a bit further than the rest of the group, and it was impossible to see her from a distance. But Jack's sharp eyes immediately detected the child. But she wasn't in the best condition. One of her legs got stuck under a toppled tree, and with all her might she tried to pull out. But alas, it didn't work. Jack pointed the men to the little girl who looked aghast at the situation. Without further ado, the men ran towards the girl as fast as they could, despite the horrific winter storm that's fighting them away. They fought harder, and they did it. They've finally reached the girl who seemed to be looking at them with pleading eyes. Jack was there as well, and one glance given to little girl made him felt love towards her. She was so small, so innocent, and so fragile. How could an angel like her be stuck in a condition like this? No, he couldn't take it anymore. He must rescue her, bring her to the safest shelter, provide food and heat, and make sure she doesn't remember anything about this ever again. It was cruel enough for the world to put her in this, but he couldn't forgive it if she will live with this memory for the rest of her life.

Jack and the men had went to their positions just as planned by Jack himself. They were standing by the sides of the tree, equally, so they could easily lift it. Jack strained his voice so the others could hear him, "Okay! On the count of three! One, two.." Everyone shifted their gaze towards their leader, already having a firm grip on the tree. "..three!" And with the combined forces that were contributed, the tree was already up in the air. Most importantly, the girl was free! Jack was ready to let out his breath. But as he turned his attention to the spot where he thought the girl would be, he was mortified. His face became pale, just like the rest of the men. Abruptly, they let down the tree back to it's original position. The girl was gone. Or rather, IT was gone.

Whatever it was, he definitely learned his lesson. Never feel love for someone, or something, you've never met. Even now, in his eighties age, he never forgets to remind himself.
